What Is the Truth About the Alleged Horrifying Killing in Dera?

Toronto – Questions continue to emerge about the incident involving the alleged killing of a young man in North Shewa, Dera, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

The government has placed strong emphasis on the incident—which has not been independently verified—linking it to Fano. This focus has led some to question the credibility of the claims and the motives behind highlighting this specific case.

Some observers suggest the incident may be part of a broader strategy to influence public sentiment, particularly among ethnic Oromos.

Numerous killings of children, women, and elders in the Oromia region have occurred without similar attention or concern from the government. These include the killing of a pregnant woman and the deaths of monks from Zequala Monastery.

The reason for the heightened focus on the Dera case, despite the lack of independent verification, has not been clearly explained.

Limited access to information from Ethiopian officials has further complicated efforts to verify the details of the incident through investigative reporting.

The claims surrounding the Dera incident are primarily based on video footage. According to the government, “Fano forces beheaded a young man in Dera.” However, the video, which is less than two minutes long, does not show the act of beheading. A man is seen holding a knife and approaching the neck of a young man lying on the ground.

Fano forces have denied the allegations and last week called for an independent international investigation into the matter.

Anchor Media’s coverage (in Amharic) contextualizes the Dera incident by referencing numerous killings in the Oromia region, which have been attributed to the Oromo Liberation Army, a militant ethnic Oromo nationalist group.
