Toronto – Political schism within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been a periodic phenomenon for decades and it seems to be resurfacing now.
According to local Ethiopian News sources, it resurfaced after eleven days of closed-door meetings in the regional capital Mekelle in which it was decided to hold a convention this month.
Addis Maleda cited Demtsi Woyane radio, on Tuesday, to report that Teklebirhan Araya, who is chairperson of the party Audit Committee, said the political schism is based on “two networks.”
“The meeting and evaluation were concluded outside before it started, and there was sabotage,” Mr. Teklebirhan was cited as saying.
He added that there were two networks in the meeting and the one that got a chance to speak was the supporter group, not the opposition.
He sees the difficulty of unity of the leadership before what he calls a network is broken apart.
Law enforcement in the region
In a related development, the regional government in Tigray announced that it has started what it calls a “law enforcement” operation in the region.
The region has been facing rising crime rates, after the end of the two-year bloody war, including kidnapping and murder of women in the region. There are also recurring reports of human trafficking, illegal trade, and appropriation of land.
There is a view that the weakening of the legislative and judiciary in the region is cited as one of the causes of the rise in crime rates, according to a report by DW Amharic. The involvement of armed groups, officials in the region, and business people in “illegal activity” including illegal gold mining is seen as an offshoot of the problem.
Tadesse Worede, the region’s deputy interim president, said the ongoing law enforcement in the region has nothing to do with political rivalry in the region. It is intended to bring about peace, security and the rule of law in the region, DW Amharic reported.
Last week, the TPLF demanded direct representation within the Federal government. Abiy Ahmed’s government has asked the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia to accept TPLF as a legal party “under special consideration.”
The Ethiopian parliament designated the TPLF as a terrorist group in May 2021 months after the organization attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force in November 2020. The organization has still over 200,000 armed combatants – something Debretsion, chairman of the organization, confirmed during an interview with French Radio this week.
