Toronto – Debretsion faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on Sunday announced that Interim Tigray Government initiated changes to the administration will not be accepted – appointment or removal.
BBC Amharic cited Fetlework Gebregziabher (also known as Monjorino), who was appointed as head of TPLF office during the 14th congress that that was organized by the Debretsion faction, as saying “Appointment and dismissal is underway in a way that violates the party’s procedures and law). She sees the appointment and dismissal by the Getachew Reda administration as part of the effort to “uproot TPLF.”
She said so in a letter she reportedly wrote to zone and district level TPLF offices. Debretsion’s faction is believed to support the base in district levels but not in all of them.
She also alleged, in her letter, that the Interim Administration “has been attempting for a long time to demolish TPLF.” The Interim administration was formed following the Pretoria agreement of November 2022.
Her letter (see below) came days after Getachew Reda, President of Tigray Interim Regional Administration, removed Leya Kassa as head of “South East Tigray Zone,” head. The Debretsion faction has elected her as one of the nine executive committees, during the conclusion of their 14th congress.
The same congress elected Debretsion Gebremichael as chairperson of the organization while it removed Getachew Reda as deputy chairperson of the organization.
In the days following the conclusion of the controversial 14th congress – which is one of the factors for the internal division within the TPLF – , Debretsion Gebremichal asserted that Getachew Reda’s administration was no longer legitimate as it was leading the region representing the TPLF.
Getachew Reda and 16 other central committee members of what used to be a single TPLF were removed by the 14th congress after they decided not to attend it.
According to the report by BBC Amharic, the Debretsion faction has passed a decision, and it was reflected in Fetelework’s letter to district and zone level offices, those appointed by Getachew Reda can not take over offices in district and zone levels. “We would like to notify that those to be appointed outside of the procedures and laws of the party can not take over power and work,” she is quoted as saying.
The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced about two weeks ago that the TPLF’s Congress and its decisions will not be accepted. It means that the Debretsion faction has some political and legal heavy lifting to do. Getachew Reda’s administration has the Federal government’s support. Even within the region, Getachew Reda has a significant support base.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties operating in the region have recently been calling for an all inclusive transitional government to resolve the crisis in the Tigray region.
