Toronto – A military helicopter owned and operated by the Ethiopian Air Force reportedly crashed in Bahir Dar on Saturday. It remains unclear whether the aircraft was carrying military commanders or government officials.

The crash occurred around noon at Belay Zeleke International Airport in Bahir Dar, the administrative seat of the Amhara regional government.

Local news outlets, including Ethio News and Meseret Media, confirmed the incident. According to Meseret Media, an airport employee confirmed that the crash took place, although no further details have been provided.

At this time, there is no information on casualties or the circumstances leading to the crash.

What is known at this point is that all flights to and from Bahir Dar, including Ethiopian Airlines flights, have been suspended following the incident. This has been confirmed by passengers and local sources.

The Ethiopian government has not released an official statement on the matter as of this writing.

According to local reports, Defense Chief Field Marshal Berhanu Jula traveled to Bahir Dar on Friday for a meeting with defense officials stationed in the region. State-owned media shared a photo of him receiving a traditional honor vestment, known locally as Kaba.

Ethio News quoted Asres Mare Damte, head of the political division of the Fano forces in Gojjam, as saying, “A miracle is undertaken before even the vestment bestowed upon Berhanu Jula is off his shoulder.” The context or intent behind his statement remains unclear.

Reports also indicate that two military helicopters were frequently flying in the area over the past two days.

The Ethiopian Defense Force on Sunday released a brief updated on its social media page denying the news. It said “there is no helicopter that crashed or run into a problem.”

Recent Developments in the Amhara Region

The Amhara region has recently been the site of intensified drone attacks, with claims that civilians are often the primary victims. In a recent incident, a drone strike in Shoa reportedly killed a mother and her two children in a shelter designated for internally displaced people.

“Almost without exception, white Christian groups have tended to vote Republican in presidential contests,” says Dr Jones. “Non-white Christian groups, non-Christian groups and religiously unaffiliated voters have tended to vote Democrat.”
This pattern dates back to the 1960s, he adds, when the Democratic party became associated with the civil rights movement and white Christian groups began migrating to the Republican Party.
Polling ahead of the 2024 election looking at voter intention suggested that for the most part this pattern held. “From our polling, we have a Republican party that is 70% white and Christian, and a Democratic party that’s only a quarter white and Christian.”
According to the PPRI’s survey of 5,027 adults, white evangelical Protestant voters were the strongest backers of Trump over Harris by 72% to 13%. White Catholic voters also backed Trump, with 55% supporting him and 34% aligned with Harris. White “mainline” non-evangelical Protestants showed a similar split.
By contrast 78% black Protestants supported Harris while just 9% backed Trump, according to the survey. Harris’s backers also included Jewish-Americans, the religiously unaffiliated and other non-Christian Americans, according to the PPRI.
