Toronto – It is public knowledge that the situation in Tigray is complex. What makes it particularly intricate is that the confrontation, at least for now, is between two rival factions of what used to be the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – a party that is about to miss a deadline set by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia.
Last week, Getachew Reda, the Interim Regional President, remarked that the conflict could erupt at any moment.
Despite the tense situation, the faction led by Debretsion Gebremichael is planning to celebrate “Yekatit 11” – the anniversary of the TPLF’s founding.
Lt. General Yohannes Gebremeskel, a former TPLF combatant who also served in the Ethiopian Army, appears to hold a critical view of the TPLF. He questions what the people of Tigray have gained from “Yekatit 11.”
